Why beets? Why beaks?

Two good things to come out of 2017 were a bumper crop of beetroot and 11 chickens.

I remember my grandparents – keen gardeners, all four of them – growing and bottling beetroot, so it’s a bit of a family tradition. This year I had enough beetroot to try a few different recipes, and also take stock of my attempts to garden in a climate that’s either all rain or all drought.

Why beaks? To celebrate the Year of the Rooster, I finally got cracking (yes, I went there) and hatched some Australorp eggs in a borrowed incubator. Out of 14 eggs, 11 hatched out during a full moon in October, so I now have… werechickens? One has a claw on her wing, but I’m sure she’s not in the least bit a murderous psychopath.

This is the first website I’ve worked on in (mumblemumble) years, so it’s fairly fluid and an experiment in progress, much like beetroot and the chickies. There will be many mistakes learning opportunities. Like the fact that this is the second time I have written this “about” section after forgetting to save an earlier draft.
